Position: Shelter Worker with Food Handler’s Certification
Location: Toronto, close to Subway TTC
Rate of Pay: $18/hr
Start Date: On Call Support
Hours of Work: All shifts – Day, Afternoon and Evening Shifts – Weekday, Weekends, Statutory holidays
FOOD SERVICES & SHELTER SUPPORT WORKER
Our Client, a Christian organization serving and advocating for refugee families by providing safe, temporary housing, initial settlement services, and follow-up support. We influence and engage the broader public through education and advocacy initiatives.
At full capacity, our Emergency Shelter has 30 rooms with 76 beds to accommodate refugee families. Each family has a separate bedroom and shared bathroom facilities. There is a communal kitchen and dining area which provides all meals and snacks for residents.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
• Following all policies, procedures and protocols during all shifts.
• Cooking, serving and cleaning up of meals during shift time.
• Wash pots, pans and kitchen utensils used from food preparation
• Assign tasks to kitchen volunteers such as cleaning and food preparation
• Providing emergency support to clients related to dietary, medical or safety concerns.
• Reporting to the Kitchen and Weekend Supervisor any client-related matters requiring case management services and/or follow-up.
• Performing custodial services including: cleaning offices, apartments, waste management and recycling.
• Ensuring all pertinent communication to other Fulltime staff is reported in the organization’s Communication Logbook.
• Monitoring the security of the facility through routine checks.
• Handling new admissions and resident discharges during the shift in accordance with our clients policies.
• Occasionally assisting non-resident families and individuals and provide courteous referrals to City Intake and other organizations that can provide further support to secure emergency shelter.
• Amenable to handling miscellaneous custodial tasks as directed by Kitchen and Weekend Supervisor or Shelter Manager.



QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate should ideally have experience working in a cross-cultural environment within an anti-oppression framework, handle confidential information and be able to manage conflict situations with skill and diplomacy. Ability to work with vulnerable client populations using sensitivity and respect. Experience working in a shelter, community kitchen
or food industry is an asset. Valid Food Handler’s certification and First Aid certification and a second language is an asset.


At time of application Must have Valid:
– PSW Certificate
– Vulnerable Police Background Check – Valid within the year
– CPR First Aide
– Vaccinated with Booster up to date
– Up to date immunizations (i.e. TB)
