We are hiring School Streets Guards to work in the Malton community, outside Corliss Public School, to help run the School Streets project in this neighbourhood. A School Street is a temporary road closure in front of a school to promote walking and other forms of active travel to school. Your main responsibilities include setting up the daily road closure, communicating with families and creating a safe environment in front of the school. You’ll explain safety rules, ensure compliance with traffic and safety laws, and wear provided safety gear. If needed, you might assist in training other School Streets Guards.
To be successful, you should be physically fit to stand and walk in various weather conditions for up to an hour. You must also be able to assist with carrying and/or assembling barrier materials between the school building and the ends of the road closure. Good hearing, eyesight, and communication skills are essential. You’ll work as part of a small team and need to be available for two shifts each weekday during the school year. The shifts total up to 3 hours a day within an 8-hour window. Your role is crucial for maintaining safety at school.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Active Transportation, with functional day to day guidance from the Active Transportation Coordinator, the successful candidate:
• Establishes the daily road closure at Corliss Public School, by transporting and setting up barrier materials at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Assists pedestrians in safely crossing roadways and accessing the School Streets event, including welcoming families in a positive and friendly manner.
• Communicates rules for safe use of the space to both students and adults, by ensuring only allowed vehicles are admitted into the road closure area, and walking with allowed vehicles through the road closure area, as needed.
• Must ensure compliance to the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the City’s Respectful Workplace Policy etc. Must wear supplied safety clothing and use all safety equipment as per training by the Manager and/or Coordinator.
• May assist in training other School Streets Guards, if requested.
• Must report incidents at the closure to the Coordinator, following up with the school officials and/or Peel Regional Police as directed by the Coordinator.
Skills and Qualifications
• Ability to stand and walk for up to one hour at a time in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to effectively hear and see to support oncoming traffic safety.
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clear and effectively.
• Must be able to work independently without direct day to day supervision.
• Must be available Monday to Friday during the school year for 2 shifts per day (at school entry; at school dismissal) as per the provided hours of duty.
• Access to a vehicle is an asset.
• Fluency in languages spoken in the Malton community (e.g., Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Arabic) is an asset and supports inclusive communication.
• You will be working 2 shifts consisting of up to 3.5 hours a day, during an 8 hour window.
• A Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) will be required of the successful candidate, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
Hourly Rate/Salary: 18.23 – 21.71
Hours of Work: up to 17.5 hours per week
