<p><h3>Position Summary</h3><p>The primary role of the Physician Assistant (Oncology Hospitalist) is to participate in the assessment and care of hospitalized oncology patients under the supervision of the attending physician. The PA will provide care under delegation using evidence-based clinical practice standards, adhering to established protocols, and within the medical directives endorsed by the RVH Medical Advisory Committee. As an integrated member of the health care team, the PA will demonstrate commitment to life-long learning, quality improvement, patient safety, and collaborative team-based care.</p><h3>Reporting</h3><ul><li>Oncology Hospitalist Division; and</li><li>Manager, Academic & Medical Affairs</li></ul><h3>Qualifications</h3><p><b>Education :</b></p><ul><li>Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent</li><li>Undergraduate Degree</li><li>Graduate of a Canadian or US Accredited Physician Assistant Education Program</li><li>Eligible to challenge the National Physician Assistant Certificate Exam, or Canadian Physician Assistant Certification – Mandatory</li><li>Confirmed registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or with an application pending approval.</li><li>BCLS, and ACLS</li></ul><p><b>Experience</b></p><ul><li>Experience in Internal Medicine, Oncology, or Hospitalist settings strongly preferred</li></ul><p><b>Competencies</b></p><ul><li>Integrate all core PA competencies to provide optimal, ethical, and patient-centered medical care</li><li>Perform complete and appropriate clinical assessments of hospitalized oncology patients and formulate clinical treatment plans</li><li>Use preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions effectively</li><li>Demonstrate proficient use of diagnostic and procedural skills relevant to oncology and inpatient medicine</li><li>Recognize scope of practice while demonstrating effective consultation practices with supervising physicians and other healthcare professionals</li></ul><h3>Clinical and General Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Obtain health histories including demographics, chief complaint, history of present illness, past medical / surgical history, family and psychosocial history, medications, and allergies</li><li>Perform comprehensive assessments, develop differential diagnoses, order appropriate investigations, and coordinate management of oncology inpatients</li><li>Provide ongoing inpatient care, including daily rounds, progress notes, discharge planning, and continuity of care</li><li>Support the management of acute complications of cancer and its treatments (e.g., febrile neutropenia, thromboembolism, metabolic emergencies, pain, palliative symptom management)</li><li>Perform procedures such as venipuncture, blood gas collection, ECG interpretation, and other procedures within scope and training</li><li>Support use of healthcare technology and applications such as Connecting Ontario, Meditech Expanse, and electronic order sets</li></ul><h3>Communication</h3><ul><li>Provide timely updates to supervising physicians and seek further direction as needed</li><li>Communicate clearly with patients, families, and caregivers, offering education and support</li><li>Liaise with interprofessional team members and other hospital departments</li></ul><h3>Medical Documentation and Record Keeping</h3><ul><li>Maintain accurate and complete documentation of patient encounters, care plans, and consult requests</li><li>Ensure appropriate medical documentation for admissions, progress notes, and discharge summaries</li></ul><h3>Collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Team</h3><ul><li>Work closely with oncologists, hospitalists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, palliative care, and other allied health staff</li><li>Collaborate with affiliated specialties including General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Palliative Care</li></ul><h3>Supervision</h3><ul><li>The PA will work under the direct supervision of hospitalist.</li><li>While not currently mandatory, RVH is interested in recruiting PAs who are willing to participate in teaching and mentoring Physician Assistant students or other healthcare professionals as part of the hospital’s commitment to education and training.</li></ul><h3>Equity & Inclusion</h3><p>RVH is committed to recruitment and selection practices anchored in principles of equity and inclusion that contribute to an anti-oppressive, respectful, and culturally safe workplace.</p><p>We invite applications from individuals who belong to groups that have been historically marginalized on the grounds identified by the Ontario Human Right Code, including but not limited to race, disability, age, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, family or marital status, and status as a First Nation, Métis, or Inuk person.</p><p>To learn about how RVH is taking steps to create and sustain an equitable, inclusive, accessible and culturally-safe environment, please visit :</p><h3>Accommodations</h3><p>RVH is dedicated to ensuring every applicant has a fair and equitable opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities throughout our recruitment and selection process.
