Duties



  • Provide individual occupational therapy assessment and individual and group treatment to referred adult forensic clients.

  • Collaborate with clients in the development of their recovery goals.

  • Monitor client mental health status and risk management.

  • Work with clients and care team in the identification of resources in the community to promote transition from hospital services and reintegration to community.

  • Secondary role may include practicing the controlled act of psychotherapy according to the hospital policy, COTO standards of practice as part of client and program needs.

  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary treatment planning.

  • Attend clinical and program meetings as required.

  • Liaise with appropriate community agencies as required.

  • Provide supervision to Occupational Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy students.

  • Collaborate with OT colleagues to provide supervision coverage for OTAs as required.

  • Contribute to furthering of the goals of the Occupational Therapy profession including attending monthly meetings.

  • Enter workload measurement data according to hospital policies.

  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures, to program and to the college of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.

  • Must be willing to discuss performance of other duties as requested by program/discipline/hospital.

  • Work in a manner that complies with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.

Qualifications



  • Master of Science program in Occupational Therapy (MSc (OT)) or equivalent according to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario standards.

  • Minimum of 3 years Occupational Therapy experience, preferably with adults with severe mental illness.

  • Minimum of 1-year experience in Forensic Psychiatry is preferred.

  • Member of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario mandatory.

  • Membership in CAOT and OSOT preferred.

  • Experience with developing and leading psycho-educational and therapeutic groups is essential.

  • Experience with recovery-based programs for the seriously mentally ill is essential.

  • Experience in motivational interviewing is an asset.

  • Experience in vocational assessment, treatment and rehabilitation planning.

  • Experience or interest in practicing the controlled act of psychotherapy upon acquiring the qualifications, training and supervision according to the hospital policy and COTO standards of practice.

  • Knowledge of forensic process and need an asset.

  • Understanding and knowledge of legislation related to mentally disordered offenders, i.e. Criminal Code of Canada (Mental Disorder Provisions), Provincial Mental Health Act.

  • Excellent communication skills, organizational ability, critical thinking and goal setting skills.

  • Knowledge of community resources.

  • Experience providing supervision to students and Occupational Therapy Assistants preferred.

  • Knowledge of applicable legislated acts (i.e. MHA, The Health Care Consent Act).

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Sound clinical judgment.

  • Valid driver’s licence and access to reliable vehicle.

  • Experience in community consultation is an asset.

  • Ability to work in a team; establish and maintain good working relations.

  • Maintain workload measurement as required and input into the workload measurement system on a regular basis.

  • English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading and writing. Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.


Salary Range: 40.36 to 56.30 per hour
