ToysRUs Canada, proud to be Canadian owned and operated is looking for a Junior Lawyer.

The In-House Counsel provides support at a junior level to the business as it relates to corporate governance, corporate/commercial, product liability, consumer goods, intellectual property, litigation, advertising and marketing, privacy, and other regulatory matters. The position provides ongoing support on company initiatives and strategic projects, including compliance programs and contract management.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal stakeholders and external counsel to prepare appropriate documentation to ensure a complete and accurate set of corporate records
  • Performs and/or supports drafting/reviewing corporate documents including contracts and reports
  • Performs and/or supports document review/production and tracking/reporting
  • Maintains and/or supports corporate database for corporate documents/information related to all legal entities, including intellectual property
  • Contributes as a member of the Legal team to provide practical solutions to our business teams
  • Advises the business teams on escalated legal matters and disputes
  • Under direction, prepares standard agreements and responses
  • Uses standard form contracts to prepare and negotiate contracts with suppliers, vendors, and service providers
  • Engages in telephone and e-mail communication with clients and third parties for the collection of information and provision of status updates
  • Establish legal policies and processes that reduce risk and increase efficiency for the organization
  • Research and analyze legal resources such as statutes, judicial decisions, and legal articles in order to prepare legal documents
  • Identify legal issues and escalate and/or resolve them as appropriate
  • Create standardized legal templates and ensure usability and implementation by the business
  • File, track, and maintain legal documentation
  • Stay current on legislative changes and revise precedents and technical procedures checklists to ensure compliance with new legislation and changes to internal processes
  • Provide senior level administrative support to business teams, including but not limited to: handling information requests, and preparing various types of correspondence and reports, and performing other administrative duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Called to the Ontario Bar
  • Minimum 1-3 years practical experience in an in-house legal department or a law firm
  • Ability to be discrete when handling confidential information
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – able to write clearly and concisely in various communication settings and styles. Can get the message across to desired effect (written and verbal). Practices attentive and active listening.
  • Detail oriented – prepares documentation accurately, paying exceptional attention to detail, and managing workload in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Collaborative style working with both internal and external customers. A proven ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Able to work independently and within a team.
  • Resilience to adapt to and thrive in an ever-changing environment.
  • Ability to multi-task with multiple deadlines and prioritize crucial deliverables, in a high-energy environment.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with experience simplifying and resolving complex problems. Pro-actively seeks solutions to problems.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills with experience handling multiple priorities
  • Excellent computer skills using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft Teams
