Data Science Architect

About this position: Context Labs is seeking an experienced technical leader with a demonstrated track record of conquering complex data challenges in the oil & gas industry to support the expansion and scaling of Context Labs’ Decarbonization as a Service platform, built on our Immutably Data Fabric technology. This is a business-critical technical leadership position, with broad exposure to the Senior Technical team and other company executives, providing technical input supporting strategic growth for the company.
Responsibilities:
- Develop a complete functional understanding of the full technology and analytics roadmap to lead the architectural design of efficient and scalable data processes/data structures supporting advanced analytics and data science applications, including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
- Work cross-functionally to help translate business requirements into technical specifications—performing research, building prototypes, and creating architectural documentation as required to formalize and communicate design concepts to Data Science and Engineering teams to guide execution.
This position reports to the Chief Product Officer, with matrix reporting to the Chief Data and Analytics Officer.
In this role you will:
- Effectively collaborate cross-functionally to develop an extensive understanding of the near-term and long-term technology and analytics roadmap.
- Work closely with Executive and Senior Technical teams to assist in the design and evolution of Context Labs’ enterprise data fabric in line with the company’s business strategy & technology architecture.
- Lead the design of architectural elements supporting scalable and reusable advanced analytics and data science applications, including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
- Assist with the translation of business requirements into technical specifications, including data feeds, transformations and analytics, and data structures.
- Develop prototypes, technical requirements specifications, and other architectural documentation as required to formalize and communicate design concepts to Data Science and Engineering teams to guide execution.
- Perform exploratory and diagnostic data analysis to derive business insights.
- Develop predictive models using a variety of analysis techniques.
- Work in a self-directed fashion to work through ambiguities, grasp and implement effective abstractions, and develop resolutions for technical conflicts.
- Report on the results of analysis and prototyping efforts in clear, effective, and concise communications.
- Regularly work with colleagues in our Amsterdam, NL, and Cambridge, MA offices.
- Anything else as may reasonably be required by the company.
Experience:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate effectively with technical & non-technical audiences.
- Excellent ability to collaborate cross-functionally, understand and deconstruct complex problems into solvable tasks, and work through ambiguity.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or Scala. Experience with JavaScript is a plus.
- Strong functional understanding of state-of-the-art AI/machine learning techniques and algorithms.
- Solid understanding of research design principles.
- Broad experience with elements of Python’s data science and machine learning ecosystem including NumPy, Pandas, Jupyter, SciPy, Scikit-Learn, Statsmodels, Altair, etc.
- Experience with data visualization tools and frameworks such as Vega/Vega-Lite, D3.js, Plotly, Gephi, Tableau, etc.
- Proficiency in using SQL for data transformation and aggregation. Experience with graph data stores is a plus.
- Familiarity with conceptual and logical data modeling principles.
Preferred Experience:
- Previous experience performing data analysis and data platform development in oil & gas or climate science applications.
- 10+ years of experience in a relevant data science role.
- Master’s degree in computer science, data analytics, applied mathematics, or related field.
- Degree in environmental science or climate science with strong experience in data analysis.
