Spectrum Health Care is currently seeking a Registered Nurse to join our team as a Clinical Educator to support our Palliative Care Program in Mississauga. This role is part of Spectrum’s integrated Specialty Program for the Mississauga OHT to deliver a highly integrated, one team, community palliative care model for the Mississauga community. The Clinical Educator, Palliative Care supports nurses, PSWs and Allied Health who are part of a tight-knit, collaborative team from across the health sector that will deliver the next generation of palliative care in Mississauga, providing holistic proactive, seamless care and support to patients, families and caregivers – enhancing quality of life, comfort, dignity and security in patients’ end of life journey.

The Clinical Educator, Palliative Care is responsible for planning, leading, implementing and evaluating comprehensive orientation and clinical education programs at the program and corporate levels for registered nurses/registered practical nurses.

Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Practice, you will work in collaboration with the leadership team, nursing managers, nurses and other stakeholders to promote clinical excellence in the delivery of high quality, safe, patient-centered care. You will review and revise policies and procedures related to professional practice and clinical care and provide education and evaluation of the learning program. You will actively participate in quality improvement activities, including shaping and monitoring quality indicators which will guide the development of tools to support teaching and learning for staff and patients.



  • Plans, delivers, and evaluates competency-based orientation and continuing education programs to palliative teams.
  • Conducts needs assessments, provides recommendations and plans education programs to support strategic objectives, innovation and evidence-based practice and subsequent coordination and facilitation of staff education.
  • Provides education support and mentorship for the neighbourhood teams as they evolve and grow and helps them flourish as “one team.”
  • Identifies challenges and proactive solutions with respect to new workflows and policies (i.e. indirect care coordination, bundled vs fee for service, new communication tools, palliative rounds).
  • Works with the program manager and other leaders to oversee the operational model of the neighbourhood teams using data, site visits, feedback from palliative home care specialists and external partners. Identifies efficiencies and best practices using continuous quality improvement (CQI) tools and resources.

Qualifications

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of two years nursing experience.
  • Must have experience working with palliative care patients.
  • Successful completion of any of the following is considered an asset:
    • Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) certification in Palliative Care Nursing or enrollment in CNA certification program in Palliative Care Nursing;
    • Learning Essentials Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care (LEAP);
    • Fundamentals of Palliative Care;
    • The Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE).

  • Current police check suitable for working with vulnerable sector.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certificate.
  • Valid G driver’s license, third party insurance coverage must be maintained at $1,000,000.00 and must have a reliable vehicle.
  • Proficiency in English both written and verbal.
